The Beetle (Type 1) was an economy car produced by Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003. It used an air cooled rear engined rear wheel drive layout that proved to be very popular and became the longest-running and most-produced automobile of a single design.
The Beetle Cabriolet was first produced in 1949. This cabriolet was the mechanical basis of the
Karmann Ghia but with a more sporty style, which was Volkswagen's first attempt to enter the sports car market in 1956. In 1970, a variant was introduced, the Super Beetle. All production ceased in 1979 and was eventually replaced by the
Rabbit Cabriolet.
