The Bentley Mulsanne was Bentley's version of the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit/Spur which replaced the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow/Bentley T in 1980. Unlike the Bentley Corniche, it followed its own developmental line that spawned several derivatives including the turbo-charged Mulsanne Turbo in 1982 and the much cheaper Bentley Eight in 1984.

The Mulsanne Turbo became it's own line of high-performance saloon when it was replaced in 1985 by the Bentley Turbo R. In 1987, the Mulsanne took interior and exterior features from the Turbo R to improve its sagging sales and re-named it Mulsanne S. The Mulsanne S along with the Bentley Eight was replaced by the Bentley Brooklands in 1992.
