The 924 (1976-1988), 944 (1982-1991) and the 968 (1991-1995) were Porsche's front-engined entry-level cars from 1976 to 1995. The 924's design was originally commissioned by Volkswagen, but it's cancellation led to Porsche using it for themselves to replace the 7-yr old
Porsche 914. The 924 only had a coupe version but the 944 added a cabriolet in 1989.
The 924 changed to deflated spare tires in the middle of 1979 thus affecting the trunk carpet. The 944 went through significant interior and mechanical changes in the middle of 1985 thus the 944 cars after the change are sometimes called 85.5 944. Aside from those, the 3 models all used the same platform but the Porsche 968 proved to be the last of its line as the coupe was dropped entirely and was replaced by the purely roadster line, the
Porsche Boxster.
