The Mercedes-Benz W201 was a compact car, introduced in 1982, designed to target the 'affordable' luxury car market that was below their then current entry-level line, the
W123. Thus the "Baby Benz", a true entry-level car, was born while the
W123 led to the E-Class. The car was considered 'over-engineered' due to the length of its development which was a result of Mercedes-Benz's awareness that the model's failure would lead to their failure. Nonetheless, the Baby Benz was considered one the best Mercedes-Benz car ever made. The line was eventually replaced in 1993 by a new class of compact cars, the
C-Class.
