The Mercedes-Benz 300SL (internally named W198) was a 2-door luxury sports car, that used the 3.0-L engine of the
Type 300 luxury sedans. First sold in 1954 as a closed sports car with distinctive "gull-wings" doors, it was re-introduced as a roadster in 1957. The SL tag meant "Sport Leicht" (Sport Light) and the 300SL,
along with the 1.9-L
190SL, are considered to be the direct predecessors of the SL-Class and the fastest cars of their time. Both were eventually replaced in 1963 by the first SL-Class roadster, the
230SL (W113).
