The Type 300
(W186,
W188, and
W189) was Mercedez-Benz's flagship line in the '50s. Analogous to today's
S-Class, these cars were elegant, powerful, exclusive and expensive. The 3.0-L 6-cylinder Type 300 had a much cheaper 2.2-L 6-cylinder version, the
W187.
The 2-door W188 or 300 S was Mercedes-Benz's most expensive car from 1951 to 1958. It had 3 versions: a 2+2 coupe (300 S Coupe), an open roadster (300 S Roadster) and a convertible (Cabriolet A). Essentially just a luxurious 2-door version of the
W186, it was one of the top luxury cars in the world. It was first updated in 1955 and became the 300 Sc. The W188 was replaced by the
W189 as Mercedes-Benz's top-end vehicle in 1958.
