The Mercedes-Benz W180 was a line of mid-sized 2.2-L cars that replaced the
W187. The new line used the engine of its predecessor but used the "Ponton" design introduced by Mercedes-Benz's 4-cylinder line, the
W120. The first model was a sedan, the 220a, introduced in 1954. In 1956, the engine was upgraded and was now called the 220S and that same engine was used to release 2 new versions: the
220S Coupe and
220S Cabriolet. In 1958, a fuel-injected sedan, the 220SE, was added under a new line, the W128, before before both sedans were replaced in 1959 by the larger and "Fintail"-bodied
W111 Sedans.
