The Mercedes-Benz W120 and W121 were the 4-cylinder sedan versions of the 6-cylinder "Ponton" sedans, the
W180/W128. Introduced in 1953, the W120 represented the 1.8-L sedans while the W121 was for the 1.9-L sedans. Aside from the engine, their is almost no difference between them and their
6-cylinder brothers. In 1955, a roadster variant, the
190SL (R121), was produced using the 1.9-L engine. The first 2 models were the 180 and 180D. The 180 was replaced by the 180a in 1957, 180b in 1959 and 180c in 1961. The 180D was replaced by the 180Db in 1959 and 180Dc in 1961. The 190 was added in 1956 and the 190D in 1958. Both models were replaced in 1959 by the 190b and 190Db. All models were replaced in 1961 and 1962 by the new entry-level sedan, the
W110.
