The BMW 5 Series is the mid-sized luxury car line of BMW since 1972. The 5 Series got its name by being the 5th new series after the V-8 Isetta era. The series was a purely sedan line until station wagon versions were added in 1992. It's currently in its 5th generation.
The BMW E28 was the successor of the
BMW E12 and is considered the 2nd generation of the 5 Series. Introduced in 1981, it came in 4 models: the 518, 520i, 525i and 528i. In 1983, the diesel-powered 524d, the turbo-charged 524td and the high-efficiency 525e was added. In 1984, the fuel-injected 518i replaced the 518 and in 1985, the 535i, the M535i and the very first M5 sedan. North America only models included the 528e, 533i and 535is.
